Michael Reid
Michael Reid is Principal Clarinet of the Zurich Tonhalle-Orchestra. He lives in Zurich city with his wife, a violist in the Tonhalle, and their 2 children. He also has 3 older girls from his first marriage.
He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and studied at the Guildhall School of Music with Yona from 1976-80. After completing his studies in London he studied with Hans-Rudolf Stalder in Switzerland finishing with his soloist-diploma in 1983. At this point he had already been appointed assistant 1st+ Eb clarinet with Zurich Opera. In 1986 he succeeded H.R. Stalder as principal clarinet of the Zurich Tonhalle-Orchestra. He performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician. Highlights include the first Swiss performance of John Corigliano’s concerto and Mozart’s concerto on the basset clarinet conducted by Frans Brüggen. He is a member of the Zurich Wind Octet “La Gran Partita” and the “Arlequin Ensemble”. Together with his chamber group Arlequin, he annually organises the “International Summer Course for Winds” at the Hindemith Music Centre in Blonay, Switzerland. Michael’s further interests include occasionally playing the highland bagpipes- usually in P.M.Davies’s “Orkney Wedding”.
